History

1966 Camden, with the help of Rachel Hubback, was the first London borough to start a Volunteer Bureau.

5th June 1967 The Bureau opened its door to the public for the first time. The Bureau was an early pioneer in what has become an enormous movement, with around 600 Volunteer Bureaux in Britain today.

May 1985 The launch of the first database to match volunteers to organisations, supported by grants from the GLC and Rank Xerox. This lead to the software being taken up by other Volunteer Bureaux.

April 1990 The Bureau became independent from its parent body, Voluntary Action Camden. For the launch, the shop front was wrapped up like a parcel, a gift from Voluntary Action Camden to the people of Camden.

April 1996 The start of the National Lottery Charities Board funded project to do outreach work with organisations, training for volunteers and organisations, and talks around the borough to raise awareness of the benefits volunteering.

June 1997 Staff, volunteers, voluntary organisations and special guests proudly celebrated the Bureau’s 30th Anniversary.

April 1998 The creation of a new Equality Support Worker post, funded by the National Lottery Charities Board. Their work is to assist people with physical disabilities and mental health difficulties, who want to volunteer, to find a suitable volunteer opportunity.

November 1999 As part of the Camden Vibrant Communities Partnership wins funding from the Home Office Active Communities Unit to extend its work in various new ways. The new initiatives include this interactive website, high profile poster campaigns, a Volunteer Coordinators Forum and other capacity building inititatives.
